Objectives


The objective of the Agri-Food Sciences and Environment Doctoral (or PhD) Program is to train scientists and professionals capable of responding to the increasing demand in science, research and innovation in the fields that sustain the agri-food sector, the interrelation of humans withthe environment, which contribute to the well-being and the sustainability of society in general.

Specific objectives


• Train high level researchers and professionals capable of giving innovative solutions througha comprehensive approach, contributing to theagri-food production and sustainable development, capable of contributing solutions that consider the social, environmental and economic perspective.

• Train highly qualified human resources with the skills to lead research and technological development initiatives, in the academicscope, state administration and the private sector.

Admission requirements


To be in possession of the academic degree of Bachelor or Master in some of the areas related to agri-food, forestry, environmental or biological sciences and other related fields.

Graduate profile


The graduate of the Doctoral Program in Agri-Food Sciences and Environment of the Universidad de La Frontera is capable of working in the management and innovation of production processes, in the design and execution of research programs and projects, and in the design of sustainable agri-food systems. He/She is trained in basic environmental sciences and agri-food systems, production processes, biotechnological applications, technological innovation, the design and optimization of agricultural value chains, leadership and entrepreneurship, and environmental conservation.

The training enables the graduate to develop basic and applied research in the field of agri-food production; to create and assess sustainable agri-food processes; to develop technological innovations in the field of agri-food production; and to diagnose problems and design solutions that reconcile the agri-food production, as well as the conservation and preservation of the environment.

The graduate of this Program is capable of integrating and leading work teams, communicating in an effective way with different social actors, creating and applying knowledge, and of considering ethical principles in all dimensions. Dueto the systematic training the graduate will be able to work in public or private services and institutions, universities and research centers, assuming functions in scientific development, technological adaptation, production process optimization, supporting the draft of public environmental and social sustainability policies.

According to the graduate’s profile, there are three main areas in which he/she will be able to work:

Agricultural production: Focused on the handling of agri-food production systems with emphasis on crops (grains, grain legumes, industrial and forage crops), livestock (cattle, sheep and small species) and forestry systems. Specific competencies, such as the development of basic and applied research in the field of agri-food production to provide high-quality raw materials for the industry and the public sector, and the creation and assessment of sustainable agri-food processes, are required.

Agri-food management and innovation: Mainly focused on marketing, the generation of ideas and the management of agri-food product innovations and aspects related to the conservation of the environment. Specific competencies, such as the development of technological innovations in the area of agri-food production, are required.

Sustainability of agri-food systems:Based on the diagnosis and identification of environmental problems in agri-food production systems, knowing and understanding new tendencies in management schemes that reconcile the agri-food production and nature conservation. Special competencies, such as the diagnosis of problems and the design of solutions that reconcile the agri-food production and the conservation and preservation of the environment, are required.

Additionally, five generic competencies can be identified: a) Efficient communication b) Leadership skills c) Teamwork skills d) Creativity to create and apply new knowledge e) Ethics in research and the application of science.
